Complicated homecoming...

It had been years since Alastor had last seen this town, bustling with humans and reeking of demons. It was almost comforting...if not for the fact that he knew his master was here. The master he'd abandoned without a word, who would be fully justified in striking him down for his insubordination. But it wasn't in Alastor's nature to run. He'd had his taste of freedom, now it was time to face the consequences. If he was lucky, maybe he could come out on top this time and be truly free.

But that would be once he entered Devil May Cry, something he would wait until daytime for. He didn't want to catch his master just returning from a demon hunt and ready to shoot anything that had fangs and claws. So in the darkness of the desert night, he stood atop a building across from the Devil Hunter's shop. His senses were attuned for any hint of magic approaching him, but he might not register an ordinary human right away.

Apparently, it's being insanely attractive to other people that kill creatures from children's nightmares.

I've kinda given up on trying to understand why Dante does the things he does.

You're doing that sweet talking thing again.

He's the closest I have to a best friend. I should probably try to at least understand him a little bit.

Just telling the truth.

Some people just don't make sense no matter how hard you try. He'll explain it if he feels like it, but most of what he does is probably on impulse.

Uh-huh.

Sometimes he does.

With people like that, you're generally not going to figure them out without asking some direct questions.

Asking direct questions of Dante isn't always an option.

He's difficult, I know. But even him avoiding the question can tell you something, you've just gotta read between the lines.

Pretty sure between the lines is a giant cry for more pizza.

I think it's more like a cry for attention. You wouldn't see it, since you don't make a habit of visiting twice in a day, but he always seems kind of bummed out when you drop by, give him a message and then leave.

*Not to mention when she didn't visit for a while, but. Uh. That was kind of because he was there, so he doesn't really want to bring that up.*

He doesn't usually seem particularly happy to see me. Probably wouldn't be if I just showed up for no reason at all either.

I'm pretty sure he's just not happy to see someone that's going to make him do work. He gives Morrison the same reaction.

Then he'd just about never see me at all, if I didn't bring him jobs.

That's...kinda the point. He's probably unhappy to see you because you almost always visit just to give him a job. And really? I can say I'm not too fond of the woman in my life that only talks to me when she wants to drag me into something troublesome, either.

And if I just showed up to hang out he'd be waiting for me to drop a job on him. So does it make much of a difference at this point?

Might help if you told him you were just there to hang out. Not sure he'll buy it, but I'm sure you can convince him you actually want to see him if you try.

He probably wouldn't even if I tried to convince him. You don't realize how much arm twisting I have to do to get him to take most of the jobs I bring him.

That would be because he's lazy. You should see how often he tries to point Morrison in my direction with the boring jobs.

I see you two share a similar idea of what makes a job fun.

People like us...don't really like to sit and wait for things. We need something to pay attention to or we go stir crazy. That's why Dante's always got some sort of magazine when he's watching the office, and why you always see me with a comic or a movie when I don't have anything else to do.

*It's also why he ran away when Dante just locked him in the weapons closet...*

By that logic, shouldn't any job be better than none at all?

Except a lot of jobs involve a ton of sitting around and waiting for something to happen. And we can't even do anything to keep ourselves occupied, because we have to be paying full attention the entire time.

[patricided]

You both know I bring jobs to you two when I can't do them. If I could there would be no need to get you guys involved at all.

That's why we do them, even if they're not exactly our favorites. We just prefer when the 'finding our prey' part is a bit more active, yanno?

[patricided]

Next time I won't do the legwork for you. Saves me time. But don't come crying to me if it turns out to be a small fish.

Hey, I'm not complaining about having tips thrown my way! I just wish so many of the local problem demons didn't spend so much time hiding in the woodwork that we pretty much have to wait for them to move first.
